That about sums up our day today.. We were at St. John's University in Queens, NY shooting some summertime admissions photos.....(arrrggggh, not the greatest time for natural images) It was definitely tough to get going today, the heat, no "real" activity during summer session, etc., etc.... I decided to take my son to work with me today.. It was truly amazing, he is fearless got right in the miz with the students and made a tough day really GREAT!!!! There is an interesting piece in the Hartford Courant this morning about the "are the crest of a high school graduate wave that began rising more than a decade ago and will fall for at least a decade to come." There are some startling numbers that will surely have an effect on the recruiting game in the forseeable future.. Looks like some tough times ahead for a lot of schools. It will be interestinig to see how individual Colleges and Universities tackle the numbers.

Whoa... Stumbled on a post by Danah Boyd this morning that was sure to create some serious buzz.. It is a blog post about an essay she wrote on MySpace and Facebook and how they relate to CLASS in America today.. Some excerpts from Danah's controversial essay:
"The goodie two shoes, jocks, athletes, or other "good" kids are now going to Facebook. These kids tend to come from families who emphasize education and going to college. They are part of what we'd call hegemonic society. They are primarily white, but not exclusively. They are in honors classes, looking forward to the prom, and live in a world dictated by after school activities."
"MySpace is still home for Latino/Hispanic teens, immigrant teens, "burnouts," "alternative kids," "art fags," punks, emos, goths, gangstas, queer kids, and other kids who didn't play into the dominant high school popularity paradigm. These are kids whose parents didn't go to college, who are expected to get a job when they finish high school. These are the teens who plan to go into the military immediately after schools. Teens who are really into music or in a band are also on MySpace. MySpace has most of the kids who are socially ostracized at school because they are geeks, freaks, or queers."
I read this and was quite disgusted, not at Danah but at the path we are going down as a society..
We spend a good deal of time on college campuses and see a lot of Facebooking, MySpacing going on all the time... Unfortunately I think that Danah is pretty accurate in her study.. We always hear the "MySpace is for Losers"... There must be a ton of losers in the world, 186 million to be exact according to MySpace Numbers... I think I've said plenty on this one.. Danah has definitely started a controversial one....
By the way, according to Danah's recent post, there has been almost 100k hits on the essay..

The summer months are typically a slow time for actual shooting, we have been extremely busy preparing for the upcoming FALL semester... This year is shaping up to be another BUSY one.. We have filled up several slots for the Fall Semester into November already... This is crazy, it's not even officially summer yet and I'm writing about Fall semester... We have several housekeeping chores to get to this summer, that like usual will be put on the backburner... As I wrote on Friday, we are totally redoing our website again, we have the framework pretty much all set.. The problem we are having is picking the images we want to show on the web... Finding the right mix and the right number of images has been painstaking.. Going through six months worth of images.. I iguess it's not a bad problem to have.. After an extremely successful first half of 2007, we have an enormous amount of new images that we need to showcase.. As we go into the relatively quiet summer months, we have decided to overhaul our identity on the web.. We have been tinkering around with a new look to our website... As we arrived into JFK early this morning (01:15 am), this is the scene throughout Terminal Six... Scores of stranded travelers strewn on cots and wrapped in blankets... It was truly a ridiculous site to see.. I thought we were arriving in a third world country.. This has become a familiar site while traveling in and out of JFK this past year.. It has made our travels extremely stressful.. To top it all off, we usually stop at Starbucks in Danbury, CT which is open 24 hours... Well guess what, it was CLOSED, for renovations.. Here are a few from our second day at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX... Sitting at an airport yet again... Waiting... Another delay, this one is going on two hours.. We were supposed to leave at 6:10 pm cst.. As I write, the plane we are going to JFK on is above Little Rock, AR according to flightaware.com ... So our new departure time is roughly 8:15 cst... It has become the year of "nightmare travel", it seems that every trip we have gone on this year has been a rollercoaster... Tonight was no different as we departed JFK on JetBLue to Austin two hours late due to, I guess "drizzle", go figure... After pushing back from the gate, we settled in line behind what seemed like a million wide body aircraft going overseas.. Well as it stands we just rolled in to San Marcos, TX at 3:15 central time, take a quick nap and off to work at Texas State University bright and early.. Just finished reading a great article about "class" at Yale, one student's journey at the Elite University.. You can find it here There seems to be a lot of this subject around lately... It would be a treat to have SAM JACKSON weigh in on the subject, as he is a member of Yale '11... Look forward to some chatter on this one.
Well so much for a much-needed rest... We are off again on Sunday afternoon for a few days at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX... Many clients tend to stay away from scheduling shoots in the summer for obvious reasons: Not a lot of Activity, etc... We have found though in previous summer assignments, they can be extremely productive.. There is a captive audience of students in summer sessions.. It is a great time to populate an image gallery of "academic life", including some great faculty-student interaction as classes tend to be smaller than normal... One thing we won;t see this time around are dorm rooms like the one above, I love the interaction and what;s going on in the room, but it's way too messy.. What is everyone's policy in this one???? Do your school require a signed model release during photo shoots or are you covered by a form that is signed when each student registers either through Admissions or Registrar's office?? This always seems to be a hot topic in our field.. I went back over the last semester and a half of clients to see what the numbers were.. Of the 36 different schools we worked for 31 or 86% had "BLANKET" statements... As a photographer trying to capture "natural" campus life images, this is the optimal situation...
